Lot 1069 Rocket Mail, 1936, a lovely specialized collection, housed in a limited edition (No. 4) abum with slip case of The First International Rocket Mail USA-Mexico July 2, 1936, the first part of the album is 64 pages, which is the book written by Oliver Rumbel and published 1956 by Post 37 in McAllen, Texas, the album also features examples on cover in matched sets, errors in spelling of DISPACHED (missing "T"); a cover damaged by explosion and marked as such; and numerous blocks, pairs and singles plus errors and several examples of experimental covers; this is a fascinating collection combining the book and many lovely examples for the rocket mail enthusiast; in excellent condition overall and all imaged on the website. Estimate $1,500 - 2,000 The concept of rocket mail was that of the Post Commander's 16 y.o. son whose hobbies were rocketry and stamp collecting in an effort to pay off the mortgage for Post 37 back in 1936. Both US and Mexico postal authorities were reluctant at first but ultimately agreed and the effort garnered significant international press. Approximately 1,000 letters were sent across the river via rockets that day and then sold to collectors. |
