Lot 77![]() 1898, 2¢ Washington, type IV, red (Scott 279B), tied by two light cancels to this large, ornate and embossed Valentine cover mailed in 1899; the cover contains a lovely and colorful card with no tears which depicts a verse and drawing in blue; indeed a lovely and rare combination in such a large format, Very Fine to Extremely Fine. Estimate $40 - 60 In the 1850's "The New Yorker" published an article saying valentine cards were a very distasteful means of proclaiming your love, the article went further saying the cards were a fad and would eventually run their course; well - some 175 years later, the valentine card market is still booming! . |
